Over Harry Wich
Voordat Harry Wich (1927-2002) zich begin jaren ‘90 geheel ging wijden aan de schilderkunst, was hij lange tijd werkzaam als decor- en kostuumontwerper. Wich ontwierp decors voor vrijwel alle Nederlandse toneelgezelschappen waaronder de Haagse Comedie, voor het Holland Festival en voor vele opera’s en balletvoorstellingen. Het theater is in zijn schilderkunst altijd een rol blijven spelen. Als decorstukken voerde hij objecten als de tafel, de schaal, de stoel en het huis ten tonele. Wich schilderde de dingen die hij dagelijks om zich heen had. De originaliteit van zijn werk ligt dan ook niet zozeer in de keuze van zijn onderwerpen, maar des te meer in de wijze waarop hij die wist te vertalen naar uitzonderlijk gevoelige en poëtische beelden. Zijn stillevens en landschappen zijn doorgaans opgebouwd in lichte en vergrijsde pastelkleuren waarin soms een scherper gekleurd detail subtiel is geïntegreerd. In de soberheid van het kleurgebruik en de keuze van zijn composities ligt juist de kracht van zijn werk. Subtiliteit spreekt tevens uit zijn hantering van vorm en licht. Wich putte zijn inspiratie vaak uit persoonlijke herinneringen die hij meestal had opgedaan tijdens reizen, en ook muziek was voor hem een belangrijke inspiratiebron.

Before Harry Wich (1927-2002) decided to dedicate his time solely to painting, in the early nineties, he had already been a scenery and costume designer for quite some time. Wich designed scenery for most of the theatre companies in The Netherlands, including the Haagse Comedie, the Holland Festival and numerous opera and ballet productions. The theatre continued to play a role in his artwork; he used objects such as tables, bowls, chairs and houses as scenery in his paintings. Wich painted the things he saw in daily life. The originality of his work does not lie as much in his choice of subject as in the way he was able to translate them into exceptionally sensitive and poetic images. As a rule his still-lives and landscapes were built up in light and greyish pastel colours in which a sharper coloured detail is subtly integrated. The power of his work lies in his restrained use of colour and choice of composition. The way he treats form and light is expressed quite subtly. Wich often drew his inspiration from personal memories acquired during his travels and music was also a painting stimulus.
