All of Françoise Abraham’s (1962) work is based on the theme of ‘dance’. She comes originally from the ballet world and was fascinated from an early age with the entourage of ballet. She started out designing and making costumes, later on expanding her activities to creating scenery.
It was then only a small step from scenery to sculpture. Fascinated by movement and shape in space, Abraham started concentrating solely on making sculptures. Abraham also managed to master the ins and outs of this new art form. Her bronze sculptures, with their beautiful smooth skin, testify to a vast technical know how. They are characterized by a strong emphasis on dynamics and muscular strength. At the point where the muscles clench is where the most weight lies. The heads are small in comparison. The capacious muscularity of the legs and backside are exaggerated to an imposing mass.
Dance is portrayed from within by Abraham, through her experience as a dancer.
This produces a fascinating integration of two art forms.
