Hanneke Roelofsen (1956) wants to express human emotion in her bronze sculptures, especially those that drive and inspire us. She is able to translate this fascination for inspiration in the expressive sculpting of human figures that emit a powerful tension. Roelofsen is often motivated by dance, to which she has always felt attracted. It is therefore not surprising that she has found her ideal mode of expression in the human figure. Just like dancing, Roelofsen translates emotion into motion in space. She succeeds in expressing these dynamics in a very convincing manner, which is not at all easy in a static material like bronze. The poignancy of her figures does not come from their facial expressions but from their dramatic postures. They have extraordinarily expressive characters. Grace as well as an energetic expression radiates from the way their long legs and arms relate to their bodies. Roelofsen can express inner life by balancing content and form without having to compromise on tension.
