After working for quite a while in music and photography, Nadine Debay (1963) found that the ideal way to express herself was through sculpting. The direct contact with the rough, earthy clay and the freedom that moulding this compliant material offers opened up new possibilities for her. She is totally conscious of the process in which the sculpture slowly takes shape. She is continually inspired by the fact that the moment of creation is defined, knowing that the sculpture in making can radically change character at any given moment. The concentration on and love for the process preceding the completion of a sculpture is tangible in the result. The proportions of Debay’s female figures are balanced yet she also leaves a lot to her own imagination. Woman is the subject matter of her work; she sometimes depicts her full-length and sometimes just her torso. Her appearance is reduced to elementary shapes, in which flowing lines characterise her. Each and every one of Debay’s bronze sculptures emanates serenity and autonomy. The artist describes her sculptures as symbols of inner peace and love.
