Gerard Brouwer’s (1951) sculptures have a typically Dutch character. He shows us sturdy ordinary people that come across as stable and earthly. We see them during their daily activities, with their shopping bags hanging from their bikes, a child holding their hand, talking to colleagues. Couples and families, farmers and businessmen, musicians and athletes and even the animals have a certain robustness and tranquillity to their appearance.
The design is also unaffected; attention is paid in the first place to the relationship between shape and mass within the surrounding space. Large quantities are more important than details. Posture, motion and expression are translated into three-dimensional shapes.
Gerard Brouwer loves his profession, artistically as well as traditionally. His sculptures are of a high technical quality. He feels at home sculpting at any size, from small sculptures to monumental works of art, anything that is destined for a public space. He is a modest and enthusiastic professional who goes his own way.
