That simplicity can be powerful is expressed in an extraordinary manner in Délaer’s still-lives. The tranquillity that his compositions radiate is remarkable. Even though no more than three to five objects are usually depicted, the energy and dedication with which they are painted provide them with such character that the panels that measure 90 by 120 centimetres can be effortlessly filled. The tranquil quality is heightened by the artist’s conscious choice to leave the space in which the still-life is painted undefined. Not only do the walls against which the compositions are outlined or the tables on which they rest remain innominate; there is not even the hint of a bearing surface through the use of a subtle line. Délaer is still able to prevent the impression that the fruit and objects are suspended in the air by using their reflection to suggest a bearing surface. By excluding as much interference as possible this artist is able to express what means the most to him: peace and tranquillity.
