The Iraqi artist Saad Ali (1953) paints colourful and fairytale-like scenes on old, weathered doors or windows. Human figures play the main role on all of his panels; they are often depicted with huge almond shaped eyes and long eyelashes. People intimately entangled with one another suggest a feeling of solidarity. The relationship between the mutual figures appears to be more important than the individual identity from which the loving couple or group fit together. Lithe bodies, full lips and outstretched arms with long fingers; the whole appearance of the main characters radiate desire. Due to their Oriental and poetic physiognomy they summon up an atmosphere that is reminiscent of the stories from Arabian mythology. Saad Ali’s style is distinguishable in more ways than one. Red, yellow and the many gradations of these colours dominate in his work. Complimentary colour contrasts heighten the expressiveness by using distinct lines that are powerfully set down. It is the combination of this specific use of colour and the secure line play with which Saad Ali sets down his eccentric and imaginative figures, which make sparks fly through the expression of these works of art.
